Finnish-Australian jewellery maker and artist
Inspired by my Finnish-Australian heritage, my vision is to create handmade jewellery that explores the art form as an intimate sculptural object held close to the human body, and conveying personal meaning to the wearer
About the artist
Jessica Larm is a Finnish-Australian jewellery maker and artist with a studio in Ballarat, regional Victoria.
Ever since she was a child growing up in the art scene of inner-city Melbourne in the 1980’s she has been inspired by the mystery of the creative process. Having had the privilege of being able to watch artists at work close up from a young age formed a deep respect for art as a vocation.
Heavily influenced by the visual language of Finland, in particular the fabrics of Marimekko and the Finnish modernist jewellery and glassware that her mother shared with her growing up, her arts practice is driven to capture the feeling and connection with the motherland and this aesthetic.
Jessica brings a rich life experience to her work. Having worked as a nurse working with people in their intimate life moments, and then living through and overcoming personal health issues and trauma she discovered the power and strength that art and in particular jewellery making could bring.
Her own experience that jewellery with meaning held close to the body can provide comfort through difficult times, and weave a cultural magic that can connect people who are no longer with us, or who we draw strength from, is the motivation to make beautiful objects that wearers can enjoy for years to come.
“The Vellamo Finnish goddess ring gives me the strength to get through the hard days”
Jessica studied Bachelor of Fine Arts at Camp St Ballarat in the early 2000’s and in recent years jewellery engineering at Melbourne Polytechnic. She also has enjoyed an award-winning career in nursing, midwifery and pain management health care research.
Jessica is a recent recipient of a Ballarat Arts Foundation emerging artists grant, the Stubbs Roberts Award.
